Focus group with professionals

December 5 was a day of intensive fieldwork for AGORAge.

In the morning, a focus group was held with Casa Albergo and Borgo Mazzini Smart Cohousing equipe. A psychologist, a community nurse, an educator and Casa Albergo coordinator participated in this activity.

The purpose of the focus group was to investigate ongoing “community building” activities and initiatives, residents’ needs and desires, and theirs relationships with families. This fieldwork activity allowed us to go beyond merely gathering information, and getting closer to the vision, approach, and positioning underlying the work of the single professional and the work as a team.

Focus group with professionals

A “philosophy of care”, as it was defined by one of the participants, which aims to surpass the imaginaries and practices associated with the traditional concept of provision, thus attempting to go beyond mere service delivery, is one of the crucial issue emerged during the focus groups. Embrace this idea is a complex goal that asks professionals to rethink their job, also requiring the older persons and their families to partially change their view of the institution that, according to the participants’ words, should change “from a problem solver to a place made up of people, where the resolution is found together”, through a dialogue in which senior plays an active role in defining their own path.

We also had the opportunity to discover the interesting definition of “Casa Borgo,” a label by which the professionals define the synthesis of Casa Albergo and Borgo Mazzini Smart Cohousing. A synthesis that, echoing the above-mentioned cornerstones, seems to recall the intention to cross over the trend of dividing older people into categories (in this specific case based on place of residence and residence prerequisites), and moving toward the person standing beyond such categories and despite “ageing characteristics”.

Finally, during the focus group we also talked about the different activities that take place within the Casa Albergo, some are offered directly by the institution, others are proposed by the residents and the institution acts as an intermediary to create contacts with possible external organisations/trainers, and a third group is organised and managed independently by people who live at Casa Albergo. Each month the activities are promoted and published in a printed brochure distributed to residents.

Some of the activities carried out in December: Yoga, choir, cognitive stimulation, books corner, market, inauguration of the nativity scene created by residents, Christmas party
